How To Become A Donor

1. Contact Us

Our Donation Coordinators are available 24/7 to conduct a donor eligibility screening or to verify the donor’s registration.

2. Transportation

We make all of the transportation arrangements from the donor’s place of death to one of our U.S. facilities at no cost to the donor, their family or their caregivers.

3. The Donor Is Matched

The donor is matched to medical researchers. Information about the studies conducted is available to the family upon request.

4. Making Final Arrangements

A certified death certificate is issued. The donor’s cremated remains are scattered at sea or directly returned to the family.

The donor’s next of kin or healthcare agent can legally assist in arranging for body donation. A full and complete copy of the Healthcare Power of Attorney must be submitted together with the body donation forms.

4. Donor Has Died

DonorCure should be notified at once to determine or review the donor’s eligibility and start making arrangements for the body’s transport.

If your patient or loved one is currently in a hospital or has already died, contact DonorCure immediately and ask for assistance from any of our Donation Coordinator.

To signify your intent to donate upon death, read our eligibility requirements to determine your eligibility. Then complete the whole body donor registration form using our online software.

Be sure to inform your family members or anyone legally allowed to execute your will about your decision to become a whole body donor so they know about your plan and can carry out your wishes upon your death.

Upon receiving your registration, your information will then be entered in our whole body donor registry. In 2-3 weeks, expect to receive your donor card and welcome packet in the mail. Wherever you go, always have your donor card with you.

What Does It Take To Be A Whole Body Donor?

The requirements for being a whole body donor for DonorCure are minimal. Almost anyone who wishes to donate their body for the advancement of science is welcomed. We accept individuals with a wide variety of medical conditions and do not impose any age restrictions.

However, being diagnosed with certain communicable diseases such as HIV/AIDS or Hepatitis B can affect your eligibility. History of intravenous drug use, recent prolonged incarceration, institutionalization, homelessness, and severe obesity or emaciation upon passing can also disqualify you. We accept donors from all states within the continental United States.
Do I Have To Call Your Office To Register as a Whole Body Donor?

Those who wish to register as a DonorCure whole body donor before they are terminally ill may register using our online registration form. However, individuals close to passing need to call us directly to begin the registration process.
What Should I Do If A Donor Is Close To Passing or Has Already Died?

If your patient or loved one wasn’t able to register as a whole body donor while alive, they can still become one upon death. Be sure to contact DonorCure at once to determine the donor’s eligibility. The earlier you coordinate with us, the higher the chance of acceptance is. The same also applies to patients who are currently in the hospital and are close to passing. Donation Coordinators are available 24 hours a day to assist in the completion and submission of necessary consent documentation.
When Should The Donation Consent Forms Be Completed And Who Should Sign Them?

Donors who are capable of signing the consent forms themselves should immediately do so and submit them to our Donation Coordinators.

A donor’s health agent legally appointed by a Health Care Power of Attorney (HPOA) can also sign the consent forms on their behalf should they be unable to do so. Since HPOA requirements for whole body donation can be very specific, make sure to submit the HPOA documents over to us for review before the consent forms are signed.

In the absence of a valid HPOA, the consent forms will need to be signed by the deceased donor’s legal next of kin.
Who Should Pay For The Body's Transportation To A DonorCure's Facility?

Upon notification of a donor’s death, DonorCure will make transportation arrangements at once. All related costs shall be on our account. To ensure that all transportation expenses are covered, family members and caregivers are advised not to contact a funeral home themselves at the time of passing.
Can a Donor Request Which Research Study or Organization Their Donation Would Benefit?

Much as we want to, DonorCure cannot guarantee matching a donor with their preferred organization or field of research. Their placement is usually dictated by the research and training needs at the time of their donation.

Families can also request information from us on how a specific donation contributed to the advancement of modern medicine.
Can DonorCure Assist With a Donor's Obituary?

DonorCure has no legal license to provide obituary assistance to our donors. Families can instead contact a local newspaper’s obituary department. If they want to mention DonorCure in the obituary, they may do so but please refrain from using phrases such as “Funeral arrangements made by DonorCure” or “Cremation services courtesy of DonorCure”. It would represent us as a licensed funeral establishment which we are not. An appropriate choice of words would be “Whole body donation made possible by DonorCure”.
How Long Do Families Have To Wait For The Cremated Remains and Death Certificate?

Depending on the state or country, death certificates are usually mailed to the family within 4 to 6 weeks. Cremated remains, on the other hand, usually takes around 8 to 12 weeks from the time of passing before they’re sent back to the family.
How Will Whole Body Donation Interfere With Funeral Arrangements?

Unfortunately, open-casket funerals are not possible for whole body donors. But families can always hold a memorial service for the cremated remains.
Will I Really Not Pay Anything as a Body Donor?

Once a whole body donor gets accepted, DonorCure assumes all expenses incidental to the donation process. From the transportation arrangements to paying for the certified copy of the death certificate and cremation, we got it covered. We also take care of the cost of returning the cremated remains to the family or scattering it at sea.
