Research is done to polish our knowledge on current topics and find ways to develop them. It is developing existing knowledge, theories, and ideas to keep up with continuously occurring advancements. The research process includes hypothesis formation, data collection, results analysis, conclusions, and creating recommendations for possible future studies and references.
The most common purpose of research is to expand existing theories to make them better or more accurate. Generally speaking, research requires a lot of effort and cannot be accomplished in just one sitting. Numerous factors determine how well your research may go. Some take a decent amount of time to finish, while others can take up to years of experimenting just to formulate a conclusion.
Research is not just applicable to science-related fields. There are researchers in other areas of study such as social psychology, medicine, historical studies, philosophy, etc. However, most researchers initiate them to explain theories in physical, biological, and social science areas. Researches consist of several questions that stem from curiosity. Types of Research
There are two types of research: Basic and Applied. Basic Research revolves around the general study of existing topics that researchers have yet to explain. These are focused on explaining further existing knowledge. On the other hand, applied research aims to make use of previous successful basic research studies on a more complex level.
Exploratory research was the first created kind of research as it revolves around topics that have yet to be understood by humankind. As the name implies, this research aims to explore subjects that have yet to be discussed and open them to the world to explain how future studies should go. This initiating step allows other researchers to seek explanation and understanding about the topic.
Descriptive research is the type to provide further explanation to existing research topics and current theories that need more clarification. From the name itself, descriptive studies describe details of a problem but not necessarily its mechanics.
Explanatory studies explain how certain things affect different aspects of a research problem. Its main objective is to connect other elements to gain a sense of the research problem. Explanatory studies also address the causes and effects of various factors on a research problem. This research mainly answers the question ‘why’ usually through experiments.
Whatever your hypothesis to a research problem may be, there should be a logical basis for how you could come up with such a topic. You may have observed certain phenomena and wish to explain how they came about. Either way, your research should revolve around a topic that comes from real observations.
Your study has to make sense. When conducting a survey, you should address any questions as to why your research is being done.
As mentioned previously, research studies are meant to end to allow other researchers to continue it. People should be able to form questions that are related to the result of their research.
Experiments consider being successful only when the control variables remain constant throughout the whole process. You should prepare to take extensive measures to make sure that you handle your variables properly to avoid inaccurate results.
Of course, research would be pointless if there is no goal for what you are experimenting with. The hypothesis allows your study to be falsifiable, which is what brings purpose to the research.
Results should be observed for the best accuracy. Every change in the research should be recorded to know whether your hypothesis is working or not.
You should be able to tell when the results of your research are valid and accurate by ensuring that every step is done correctly.
Your research should contain a compilation of all the results and statistics of the vital parts that occurred during experimentation. Statistical data allows your research to be analyzed efficiently for future references and researchers.
Methods of Research
This research relies on non-numerical data gathering procedures in obtaining results. Non-numerical data include feelings, opinions, preferences, behavior, and the like. These are results that depend on the person’s understanding rather than scientific explanations. Qualitative studies are usually conducted for psychology, social sciences, and philosophy fields.
Quantitative research, on the other hand, relies on statistics and numerical values as a result of their hypothesis. Most scientific studies obtain quantitative results from experiments and are mostly used in natural and physical science.
For students, research studies may just be a requirement to pass the semester or the subject. Most people do not realize that everything we know today about technology, science, people, etc., is a result of research. Without experiments and analysis of observations, the world would not be as advanced as it is today. As things are invented, people will wish to learn more about them, which is the primary purpose of research. We are here to figure out how things work and how we can make them better.
